Diundecyl Phthalate is a mixture of two isomers, which are the branched-chain isomers. The compound is reactive and hydrolyzes readily in alkaline solutions to form benzoic acid. It has been used primarily as a sealant for polyvinyl chloride, but also as a surface coating for calcium carbonate and profile boards. Diundecyl Phthalate has also been used as an additive in organic synthesis reactions, where it serves as an esterification catalyst. This agent can be prepared by reacting phthalic anhydride with glycerol in the presence of sulfuric acid. Diundecyl Phthalate contains a hydroxyl group that makes it soluble in water and a reactive aliphatic chain that gives it solubility in organic solvents such as dichloromethane or benzene.
