4,4'-Difluorobiphenyl is a monomer that has been synthesized by sulfonation of the diphenyl sulfoxide and subsequent chlorination. It can be used as a carbon source for various organic reactions including nucleophilic substitution, hydrogenation, and Friedel-Crafts acylations. 4,4'-Difluorobiphenyl can also be converted to copper complexes with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid. The compounds are soluble in water and have an electron microscopic appearance similar to biphenyl.
