Product Information

Name:
4,4'-Diacetoxybiphenyl
Synonyms:
  • Biphenyl-4,4'-Diyl Diacetate
  • 4,4-Diacetoxybiphenyl
Description:

4,4'-Diacetoxybiphenyl is a polymerized biphenyl that is used in the production of ion-exchange resins. It is copolymerized with other monomers to form polymers with different properties. The most common copolymers are those of 4,4'-diacetoxybiphenyl and styrene or maleic anhydride. The copolymers are irradiated to increase their viscosity, which enhances their performance as ion exchangers in chromatography. This polymer can also be ion-exchanged by chloride ions into a resin that has low thermal expansion and acidolytic stability. Acetaldehyde is used as the catalyst for this reaction. The temperature range for this process is from -20°C to 140°C.
