Dichlorodi-n-octylsilane is a silane with an electron deficient skeleton. It has been shown to have high efficiency in the conversion of solar energy into electrical and thermal energy. Dichlorodi-n-octylsilane is also a precursor for the fabrication of crystalline silicon solar cells. This compound can be used as an additive during the process of crystallization, which helps to remove impurities and improve optical properties. Dichlorodi-n-octylsilane can react with benzothiadiazole to form fullerene type structures that are highly efficient for photovoltaic applications. The infrared spectra show bands at 3400, 2900, 2500 and 1500 cm−1 that correspond to vibrations of the C=C bonds in dichlorodin octylsilane.
