2,4-Dimethyl-1-nitrobenzene is a nitroarene that can be used as a proton transfer agent. It is commonly used in the synthesis of nitroaromatics and other nitroarenes. This compound has been shown to have low energy requirements for the reaction to occur and is able to extract the proton from another molecule and transfer it to an electron-deficient site on the aromatic ring. The mechanism of this reaction is not yet fully understood, but it may involve a radical mechanism with a dibutyl radical intermediate.
