It is also used as a precursor to other compounds. 4,5-Difluorosalicylaldehyde has been shown to coordinate with metals such as copper and zinc. This compound has been shown to be an effective ligand for the synthesis of metal clusters. 4,5-Difluorosalicylaldehyde can be used for cyclic voltammetry experiments because it has the ability to reversibly change its oxidation state in response to changes in voltage.
