2,3-Difluorobenzonitrile is a fluorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon that is used as an inhibitor in the synthesis of fatty acids. It inhibits lipid biosynthesis by binding to the enzyme acyl-CoA synthase and inhibiting the reaction. The uptake of 2,3-difluorobenzonitrile into cells can be blocked by preincubation with phenylboronic acid or sodium cyanide. This molecule reacts violently with water and should not be handled without wearing protective gloves and eyewear.
