3,5-Dimethylbenzonitrile is a colorless liquid that has a strong odor. It is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of dyes and pharmaceuticals. 3,5-Dimethylbenzonitrile can be activated thermally or with light to produce fluorescence. Activated 3,5-dimethylbenzonitrile molecules have a coulombic interaction with each other and form two different polymorphs: one crystalline and the other amorphous. The macroscopic properties of 3,5-dimethylbenzonitrile depend on which polymorph it is in. The activation energy for the formation of the amorphous state is lower than that for the crystalline state. This means that more energy is needed to convert from the amorphous to the crystalline state than vice versa.
