2,4-Dinitro-5-fluoroaniline (2,4-DNF) is a redox cycling agent that inhibits the synthesis of lipoproteins and cholesterol. 2,4-DNF is a triazine compound with two nitro groups in the para position. It reacts with fatty acids to form cyclic amines that inhibit the enzyme fatty acid synthase. This inhibition prevents the production of malignant melanoma cells and reduces hepatic steatosis in patients with liver disease. 2,4-DNF has also been shown to inhibit cholesterol synthesis by inhibiting cholesterol esterase. The reaction products are then excreted as bile acids in the feces. The use of this drug in polio vaccine production has been shown to prevent hepatic steatosis and increase serum cholesterol levels.
