2,6-Dihydroxy-4-methylpyridine is an organic chemical that is utilized in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. It is a byproduct of the reaction between formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. The impurities 2,6-dihydroxypyridine and 2,6-dioxypyridine are also formed in this reaction. Impurities such as formic acid, carbon monoxide, or hydrogen cyanide can be removed by distilling the product at low pressure to yield isonicotinic acid. 2,6-Dihydroxy-4-methylpyridine reacts with alkali metal hydroxides to give formyl derivatives such as methyl formate. This chemical also reacts with metal salts to create heterocyclic rings containing nitrogen atoms.
