2,7-Dihydroxyanthraquinone is a pharmaceutical formulation that can be used as a chloride donor. It is used in the manufacture of drugs and other organic compounds. 2,7-Dihydroxyanthraquinone has been used in the treatment of chlorate poisoning. It is also used to generate chlorine gas, which is toxic to many organisms and can be used for bleaching paper pulp. Chlorine gas is generated by adding hydrochloric acid to a solution of 2,7-dihydroxyanthraquinone containing sodium chlorate.
2,7-Dihydroxyanthraquinone levels are elevated in urine when there are high levels of chloride or bicarbonate ions present in the blood. The presence of these ions indicates renal disease or severe dehydration. 2,7-Dihydroxyanthraquinone can also be detected in the urine when it has been administered to patients with kidney
