2,2-Dichloro-3,3-dimethylbutane is an alkoxycarbonyl compound that has been used in the synthesis of membrane proteins and other biomolecules. It is prepared by reacting 2,2-dichloropropane with methanol in the presence of permanganate. The reaction time can be varied from a few minutes to several hours depending on the desired yield. The product can be purified by chromatography and recrystallized from hexanes. This chemical is considered to be stable as it does not react with aliphatic hydrocarbons, halides or radiation. However, it is labile under acidic conditions and may undergo hydrolysis to form a thioether.
