Dioscorine is a type of glycyrrhizin that is extracted from the roots of Glycyrrhiza uralensis, or sweet root. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of cancer cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo. Dioscorine inhibits acetylcholine release and blocks the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. The chemical reactions that take place between dioscorine and cancer cells are not yet clear, but it may be due to its ability to inhibit the enzyme cholinesterase. Dioscorine also has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
