2,6-Difluoro-4-hydroxybenzoic acid (DFHB) is a fluorinated derivative of 2,6-difluorobenzoic acid. It has been used as an experimental anticancer agent in cell preparations and in animal models. DFHB has shown to inhibit the production of estrogens by competitively binding to the aromatase enzyme. The mechanistic basis for this inhibition is related to its ability to form a covalent bond with the sulfonyl group of the enzyme. This interaction prevents the binding of substrate and cofactor, leading to decreased synthesis of estrogens.
