1,7-Dimethoxynaphthalene is a quinoline derivative that has an oxygen function. It can be synthesized by the Friedel-Crafts reaction of naphthalene with formaldehyde, or by cyclodehydration of 1,2-dihydroxynaphthalene with hydrogen. This compound is one of the four possible stereoisomers of 1,7-dimethoxy-1,3-naphthoquinone. The two most common isomers are 5-(2'-methoxy) and 5-(4'-methoxy). Both compounds are serotonin receptor agonists and have been shown to activate the 5-HT1A receptor. The hydrogenolysed form is not active at the 5-HT1A receptor.
