6,6-Dimethylfulvene is a proton that is the reaction intermediate in the reaction of acetate extract with nitro. The reaction is an exothermic process and releases energy, which can be seen by the increase in kinetic energy. 6,6-Dimethylfulvene reacts with nitro to form fulvene and zirconium dichloride, which are both solid catalysts. The formation of fulvene has been shown to be due to nucleophilic attack on the nitro group followed by resonance energies. This mechanism leads to a more stable product than if 6,6-dimethylfulvene reacted with nitrous acid.
