2,4-Diphenyloxazole is a fluorescent molecule with potent inhibitory activity against fatty acid synthase. It inhibits the transfer of acyl chains from acyl carrier protein to the growing fatty acid chain by competitive inhibition. 2,4-Diphenyloxazole has been shown to have a long half-life in rat plasma and high solubility in water. This compound has been shown to be effective in chronic bronchitis models and provides pharmacokinetic properties that are similar to those of other fluoroquinolones. 2,4-Diphenyloxazole binds to protease receptors on the surface of cells and inhibits proteolytic activity. It also binds to apical membranes in the respiratory tract and prevents bacteria from attaching to these surfaces, which may prevent bacterial colonization.
