2,6-Dimethylquinoline is a reactive chemical that can be synthesized by the reaction of 2,6-dichloroquinoline with hydrogen and amines. 2,6-Dimethylquinoline has the ability to react with other compounds in order to form new compounds. It has been shown to react with nucleophiles such as hydroxyl groups, carbonyl groups, and amino groups. The theoretical basis for these reactions is based on the principle of intramolecular hydrogen transfer. The rate at which these reactions occur depends on the kinetic energy of the reactants and the bond cleavage that results from the reaction. 2,6-Dimethylquinoline also forms n-oxides when reacted with nitrous acid or peroxide. These n-oxides have been used as fluorescent probes for detection of amines in gas phase ionization mass spectrometry experiments.
