It is soluble in methanol and can be used as an electron donor in polymer films. 3,4-Dimethoxythiophene has been studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and found to be an acceptor. This compound also has been used for the synthesis of polymers for use in energy efficient devices. 3,4-Dimethoxythiophene has been shown to be stable in air and water but not in the presence of strong acids or bases.
