Diethyl carboxymethylphosphonate (DCP) is a precursor to the anti-cancer drug methotrexate. It is converted to methotrexate in the body by hydrolysis of the ester group. DCP has been shown to be effective against leukemia cells, and its cytotoxicity was increased when combined with copper chloride and hydrochloric acid. DCP binds to monoclonal antibodies that are specific for epidermal growth factor receptors, inhibiting their function. This leads to cell death by interfering with hematopoietic cell proliferation and differentiation.
