Difluorodiphenylmethane (DFDM) is a fluorinated alkyl compound that is a by-product of the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride. It can be released into the environment when polyvinyl chloride products are incinerated, or when they are recycled and burned as fuel in cement kilns. DFDMs have been found to cause liver damage, respiratory irritation, and skin sensitization in humans. The symptoms of difluorodiphenylmethane exposure include headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fatigue, blurred vision, incoordination, slurred speech and loss of appetite. The chemical has also been shown to have irreversible effects on enzymes involved in biochemical pathways such as protein synthesis and DNA replication. DFDMs can react with other chemicals to form reactive oxygen species such as hydroxyl radicals that can damage cells by causing lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress. DFDMs also react with sulfonic acids to form
