4,4-Difluororetinoic acid is a synthetic retinoid that inhibits the enzymatic activity of bacterial ribonucleotide reductase. It has been shown to have clinical relevance in treating infectious diseases caused by gram-positive bacteria. 4,4-Difluororetinoic acid binds to the enzyme and prevents it from synthesizing DNA, inhibiting replication and transcription. 4,4-Difluororetinoic acid has been shown to be a potent antimicrobial agent against gram-positive bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. This compound also has an inhibitory effect on tetracycline resistance due to binding to the 16S rRNA molecule.
