2,2-Dichloro-2-fluoroethanol (DFE) is a solvent used in the synthesis of some pharmaceuticals such as alpha blockers and antihistamines. DFE has been shown to cause chromosomal damage in rat liver microsomes as well as micronuclei formation in rat testicular cells. In vitro studies have shown that DFE is cytotoxic and genotoxic to human lymphocytes. Clinical studies have shown that 2,2-dichloro-2-fluoroethanol may be carcinogenic and mutagenic in humans. There are also animal studies suggesting that DFE may be teratogenic or fetotoxic.
DFE is not considered to be hazardous by inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact with intact skin. However, it can produce significant irritation if it comes into contact with the eyes or mucous membranes. It can also cause dermatitis on prolonged exposure to the skin.
