This compound has been used as a sensor for gas detection because it changes its optical properties in response to the presence of nitric oxide (NO). 2,4-Dinitro-1-(trifluoromethoxy)benzene also reacts with long chain aliphatic amines to form dinitrophenyl derivatives that are used in biological assays.
