6,8-Difluoro-4-methylumbelliferyl phosphate is a fluorescent probe for the detection of phosphatases. The compound is converted to an active form by the enzyme, and reacts with the substrate p-nitrophenyl phosphate in vitro. This reaction will produce a change in fluorescence intensity and can be detected using a spectrophotometer. 6,8-Difluoro-4-methylumbelliferyl phosphate has been used to study protein phosphorylation in vitro by inhibiting the enzymatic activity of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A). The microcapsule assay is a rapid, sensitive method for detecting phosphatases that react with 6,8-difluoro-4-methylumbelliferyl phosphate.
