Description:

Dimethyl difluoromalonate is an organic solvent that is used as a polymerization medium for the synthesis of polymers. It is also used as a raw material in the manufacture of surfactants and corrosion inhibitors. Dimethyl difluoromalonate can be copolymerized with other monomers to produce synthetic resins, which are used in the production of plastics, paints, and coatings. The solid catalyst that can be prepared from this compound is used in the production of polymers and flame retardants. Symptoms of exposure to dimethyl difluoromalonate may include irritation or burns on skin contact, respiratory tract irritation, or central nervous system depression. This chemical has been shown to cause haloalkylation when it reacts with ethylene gas under high pressure conditions. Dimethyl difluoromalonate has been shown to cause cancer in animals exposed orally or by inhalation.
