4,4-Difluoro-DL-glutamic acid is a synthetic chemical that is unreactive and has no biological function. This chemical can be synthesized using a Grignard reagent or by using nitroaldol reaction. 4,4-Difluoro-DL-glutamic acid can also be obtained through chemoenzymatic synthesis or synthetase enzyme reactions. It is typically purified through crystallization from acetone. The copper complex of glutamic acid can also be used to synthesize this compound.
