Cetylpyridinium chloride is a cationic surfactant that inhibits bacterial growth by disrupting the cell membrane. It is also an effective disinfectant and can be used to remove spores from surfaces. Cetylpyridinium chloride has bacteriostatic and fungistatic effects on human skin, but it is not active against bacteria in the blood. It has been shown to have bactericidal activity against some strains of bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens.
