3-(5-Methyl-1,2-oxazol-3-yl)propanoic acid (MTPA) is an extracellular cationic surfactant that has been shown to be an efficient method for the synthesis of citric acid. MTPA is a stable and soluble compound that is used in the production of polymers, plastics, and cosmetics. It also has antioxidant effects due to its ability to scavenge free radicals. MTPA can be synthesized by reacting methyl 3-(5-methyl-1,2-oxazol-3-yl)propanoate with hydrochloric acid and chlorine gas or chlorate ions in aqueous solution.
