N-Benzyl-4-bromobenzamide is a synthetic, non-steroidal immunosuppressant with antiinflammatory and antirheumatic properties. It is an inhibitor of the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX), which is responsible for the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandins. N-Benzyl-4-bromobenzamide has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria in vitro. It was found that this drug reduced the amount of bacteria by about 50% after incubation for 24 hours. This antibiotic also inhibits the production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which are important in inflammation and immunity. N-Benzyl-4-bromobenzamide has been used topically as an ophthalmic agent and as an amide in the synthesis of other drugs.
