Description

1,2-Epoxyhexane is an epoxide that has a variety of uses in the synthesis of polycarboxylic acids. 1,2-Epoxyhexane can be synthesized by reacting ethylene diamine with an inorganic acid such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. The reaction mechanism for this reaction is an example of a nucleophilic addition followed by elimination. It is also possible to produce 1,2-epoxyhexane by reacting two equivalents of polycarboxylic acid with one equivalent of diethyl malonate. 1,2-Epoxyhexane reacts with receptors on cells and can be used to study receptor binding and the effects of various drugs on receptor binding. Hydroxyl groups are found on the epoxide ring and can be detected using nmr spectroscopy.
