1-Ethyl-2-methylbenzimidazole is a pharmacologic agent that inhibits sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase, which is responsible for the reuptake of calcium from the cytosol. 1-Ethyl-2-methylbenzimidazole also inhibits benzoylation and nitrous oxide oxidation of methylamine to formaldehyde in the liver. It has been shown to be effective against clostridium perfringens and staphylococcus aureus, but not against mycobacteria. The mechanism of action for this drug is unclear, but it may be due to its ability to block efflux pumps that are found on the surface of some bacteria.
