Description:

2-Ethylfuran is a chemical compound that can cause lung damage. It is used in the production of human food and has been shown to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium avium. 2-Ethylfuran has been found to be a potent inhibitor of fatty acid synthesis, which may be due to its ability to compete with NADPH for binding sites on the enzyme acyl carrier protein. This inhibition prevents the formation of malonyl-CoA, which is necessary for fatty acid synthesis. 2-Ethylfuran also reacts with diethyl succinate in vitro to produce reaction products that have not yet been identified. The kinetic profile and senescence of these reactions are unknown.
