Ethyl 5-(chloromethyl)-2-furancarboxylate is a compound that prevents the growth of bacteria by inhibiting their proliferation. It acts as an inhibitor of the enzyme fumarate reductase, which is required for the production of energy in cells. This inhibition results in decreased production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), leading to cell death. Ethyl 5-(chloromethyl)-2-furancarboxylate has been shown to be effective against E. coli and Escherichia coli, as well as other strains of bacteria. The inhibitory effects are not limited to extracellular bacteria but also extend to intracellular bacteria such as Salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
