Ethyl 2-fluoropropionate is an anti-influenza drug that belongs to the class of halides. Halides inhibit influenza virus replication by inhibiting the release of viral ribonucleoproteins from infected cells and by inhibiting the synthesis of new viral proteins as well as influenza virus specific RNA. This compound has been synthesized in sodium formate and shown to be effective against HIV in vitro. The asymmetric synthesis technique was used to produce this compound.
