Ethyl 2-fluorobenzoate is a synthetic molecule that is used in the preparation of difluoroethane. It is prepared by reacting ethyl acetoacetate with fluorine gas. The carbonyl group in this molecule reacts with the phosphazene to produce a reactive intermediate, which can then be used to synthesize other compounds. Ethyl 2-fluorobenzoate has electron-donating properties due to its electron withdrawing fluorine atom and thus it can function as an electron acceptor. This compound also reacts with nucleophilic reagents like methoxide or ammonia, which results in formation of a molecule with a benzene ring.
