Ethidium homodimer is an anti-cancer compound that inhibits the synthesis of DNA and RNA. This compound has shown significant cytotoxicity against cultured cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit energy metabolism in the mitochondria and disrupt cell nuclei. Ethidium homodimer also inhibits polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by binding to inhibitor molecules and prevents replication of human DNA. It has been shown to induce apoptosis in HL60 cells, a type of white blood cell that is used as a model for leukemia. Ethidium homodimer has also been shown to inhibit cancerous growths in animal models and can be used for the treatment of bowel disease.
