4-Ethylphenoxyacetic acid (4EPAA) is an insecticide that belongs to the group of phenoxyacetic acids. It is used to control planthoppers by inducing plant cell death. 4EPAA has been shown to be toxic to a wide variety of herbivores, including the cotton leafworm, and it may also cause yield losses in plants. 4EPAAs are considered non-toxic to humans and other mammals. The mechanism of toxicity for this compound has been found to be demethylation by cytochrome P450 followed by termination with glutathione. 4EPAA also induces secondary metabolites such as cresols, which can be used as biomarkers for exposure.
