1-Ethyl-3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole-4-carbaldehyde (EDC) is a hydrazine derivative that is used in the manufacture of dyes and pharmaceuticals. It can be prepared by the reaction of benzidine with ethylenediamine or a primary amine. EDC is an important intermediate for the production of many drugs, such as levodopa, methyldopa, and carbidopa. It is also used to make dyes for textiles and paper. EDC has been shown to have carcinogenic effects on animal studies.
