Ethyl 5-amino-4-cyano-3-methylthiophene-2-carboxylate is an organic compound that belongs to the family of oxadiazoles. It has been shown to be highly active against gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Serratia marcescens, and also has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. This compound may have neuroprotective effects in rats with Alzheimer's disease due to its ability to inhibit peroxide release from neutrophils. Ethyl 5-amino-4-cyano-3-methylthiophene-2-carboxylate also inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes which maintain the structural integrity of bacterial DNA. This inhibition leads to DNA damage, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division.
