Ethyl 2-amino-5-ethylthiophene-3-carboxylate is a nonclassical alkylating agent that inhibits cancer cell proliferation and has shown tumor inhibition in colon cancer cells. It is synthesized from ethyl acetoacetate and glutamic acid diethyl ester. This compound binds to the thymidylate synthetase enzyme, which is involved in DNA synthesis, and prevents it from functioning. Taxol, a drug used for the treatment of cancer, also binds to this enzyme and inhibits its function. The average age of patients with colon cancer was found to be 54 years old. This drug has been shown to bind to X-ray crystal structures of tumor cells from all major histological types.
