The active form of this drug is N-ethyl-N-(3-sulfopropyl)-3-methylaniline sodium salt, which is a prodrug. It has been shown to slow the progression of autoimmune diseases and inhibit the polymerase chain reaction. This drug binds to cholesterol esters, inhibiting their hydrolysis by cholesterol esterase. The active form of this drug also inhibits the production of prostaglandin E2 in thp-1 cells and caco-2 cells, which may be due to its peroxidase-like activity. In addition, it has been found that this drug induces mineralization in vitro in human osteoblastic cells and chondrocytes through a process that involves regulation of pathways such as the Wnt signaling pathway.
