Description:
Ethyl 5-amino-1-benzothiophene-2-carboxylate is an anti-infective agent that belongs to the group of benzothiophenes. It has been used as a synthetic precursor in the synthesis of zileuton, which is used to treat asthma. Ethyl 5-amino-1-benzothiophene-2-carboxylate inhibits bacterial growth and has been shown to be effective against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This drug also has antiviral and antifungal properties, but is not active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis or other acid fast bacteria. The mechanism of action for this drug involves inhibition of phospholipase A2 and inhibition of protein kinase C, resulting in decreased production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes.
