1-Ethyl-1H-indole-2,3-dione is a potent anticancer agent that inhibits the production of virus and cancer cells. It is a chlorinated derivative of indole. This compound binds to DNA in the presence of piperazine and cyanuric chloride, forming an adduct that interferes with replication. 1-Ethyl-1H-indole-2,3-dione has been shown to be highly efficient for use in electrophotographic plates and as a photochemical intermediate in the synthesis of cortisone. It is also used as a fluorescent tag in molecular biology studies due to its fluorescence properties.
