3-Ethyl-1-adamantyl)amine hydrochloride is a membrane permeable amide that has been shown to be able to cross the blood brain barrier. It has been used as a synthetic precursor in the synthesis of other amines. 3-Ethyl-1-adamantyl)amine hydrochloride binds to inorganic bases, such as mercury and lead, and organic solvents, such as benzene. The compound is also fluorescent. 3-Ethyl-1-adamantyl)amine hydrochloride can be synthesized in two ways: by reacting an inorganic base with an organic solvent or by reacting an organic acid with ammonia gas and ethylene oxide at high temperatures.
3-Ethyl-1-adamantyl)amine hydrochloride has been shown to inhibit the uptake of dopamine into striatal membranes; this inhibition may be caused by its ability to bind to dopamine receptors and prevent them from activating downstream pathways
