Ethyl 2-methylquinoline-3-carboxylate is a synthetic drug that is used as an antitubercular agent. It has shown in vitro anticancer activity and is currently being studied for its ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Ethyl 2-methylquinoline-3-carboxylate inhibits topoisomerase, which is an enzyme involved in DNA replication and repair. The inhibition of this enzyme results in the accumulation of single strands of DNA, causing DNA breakage. This compound also binds to hydrophobic bonds on the surface of cancer cells, which may be due to its pharmacophore profile. Ethyl 2-methylquinoline-3-carboxylate has been shown to have multidrug resistance properties and has been associated with outbreaks in Africa.
