6-(Ethoxycarbonyl)pyridine-2-carboxylic acid is a chemical intermediate that is used in the synthesis of penicillins. It can be isolated from the filtrates of Penicillium chrysogenum cultures, or from the culture broth obtained from cereus mycelia by inoculating with dipicolinic acid and then incubating at 37°C. The compound can also be synthesized by treating pyridine-2-carboxylic acid with ethyl chloroformate. 6-(Ethoxycarbonyl)pyridine-2-carboxylic acid is used in bacteriology to produce penicillin G, which is an antibiotic with broad spectrum activity against gram positive and gram negative bacteria. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex.
