N-Ethyl-4-methylaniline is a protonated amine with the chemical formula CH3CH2NHCH2CH2NH2. It can be produced in two isomeric forms, the cis and trans. Cis N-ethyl-4-methylaniline is more potent than trans N-ethyl-4-methylaniline. The cis form is also used as a pharmaceutical intermediate for the manufacture of other drugs. The cis form of N-ethyl-4-methylaniline has been shown to have genotoxic properties and impurities that are regulated by governmental agencies due to their carcinogenic potential. This compound can be synthesized by reacting acetone with ethyl bromide in the presence of copper chloride, followed by hydrolysis with water.
