Ethyl 2-acetylhexanoate is a carbonyl compound that is used as an antifungal agent. It has been shown to be effective against yeast and moulds, and is capable of killing these organisms at long-term exposure. The mechanism of action of ethyl 2-acetylhexanoate is not well understood, but it has been hypothesized that it may function by inhibiting the synthesis of acetoacetate, which is a precursor for fatty acids. Acetoacetates are important intermediates in the metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids. Ethyl 2-acetylhexanoate may also inhibit nitrate reductase activity and nitrite production through its interaction with the enzyme's heme moiety. This interaction leads to decreased nitrogen oxide production, which can lead to an accumulation of toxic levels of nitric oxide within cells. Ethyl 2-acetylhexanoate also inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to DNA gyrase and topois
