Description

Ethyl 1-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylate is an intermediate in the synthesis of pyrazoles. It can be prepared by refluxing ethyl hydrazine with diethyl pyrocarbonate and a strong base. The reaction is monitored by gas chromatography (GC) and GC/mass spectrometry (MS). The product obtained is a mixture of two regioisomers, the desired 1-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid and the undesired 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydropyridazine. This compound can also be prepared from methyl 3-(hydroxymethyl)pyrazolecarboxylate and hydrochloric acid. Ethyl 1-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3 carboxylate has been shown to have a stable structure when subjected to XRD techniques.
